Each year, the Diversity Visa Lottery Program allows people who come from countries with low rates of immigration to the U.S. to apply for a chance to obtain an immigrant visa (i.e. Permanent Residency/ Green Card). There is no fee required for entry. Applicants are selected at random and those selected as well as the applicant’s spouse and unmarried children under age 21, may obtain the ability to live and work permanently in the U.S.

In general, persons from all countries except the following are eligible to participate:
BRAZIL, CANADA, CHINA (mainland-born), COLOMBIA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, ECUADOR, EL SALVADOR, GUATEMALA, HAITI, INDIA, JAMAICA, MEXICO, PAKISTAN, PHILIPPINES, PERU, POLAND, SOUTH KOREA, UNITED KINGDOM (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and VIETNAM. Persons born in Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan are eligible to apply. Usually, it is the birth country that determines whether one is eligible for the program, but there are exceptions such as if the parents or spouse were born in an eligible country.

For detailed information about entry requirements, please see the instructions for the DV-2010 Diversity Visa lottery at

One important note about the Diversity Visa program: the U.S. Department of State actually selects more than 100,000 applicants for the 50,000 “green cards,” assuming that many winners will not continue the application process. Those who are selected for the Diversity Visa Lottery and do intend to continue the process must act quickly and carefully to help increase their chances of obtaining the “green card.”
